Smokin’ ‘Er Out
Tomorrow we’ll be 1 week past our due date. Sigh. Again, we really don’t have much to complain about – the baby is very healthy, I’m as comfortable as possible (for being 9.5 months pregnant) and Rob can tailor his schedule to accommodate the wee one’s unpredictable arrival. But the anticipation is almost too much!!! Yet the end is in sight. We have a plan for smokin’ ‘er out. Did you hear that, Bunny? You can come out willingly…or we’re coming in after you!
We had an appointment with the doctor today (we usually see a midwife) and he scheduled us to come in Friday (10 days past our due date) to assess the situation and then plan an induction 2 or 3 days later. We hope to not have to resort to such measures, but we’ll do what’s necessary to get this kid out in time to start kindergarten.
On a more serious note: There’s actually some risk involved in letting a pregnancy go too long; the placenta is only designed to function well for so long and then it “wears out” and ceases to adequately supply oxygen and nutrients to the baby. That’s the reason for inducing labor a week or two after the due date (not just impatience). Of course an induction has its risks too. Namely, an increased probability of needing a c-section. So we’d appreciate your prayers in the next few days. First, that Bunny would remain healthy. Second, that she’d come out on her own. Third, that if an induction is necessary that it would progress well and not lead to a c-section. Last, that if a c-section happens that the surgery and recovery would be as smooth as possible.

Rob & Crystal,
How exciting to anticipate your baby with you. I keep checking your blog every day to see if she has arrived, and I pray that she will be healthy. -- Rosie
Just checking in...
I was hoping bunny might be born on either Jon's or my birthdday (5/8 & 5/9 respectively).
Thank you Crystal for the medical explanation about why babies can't go too long overdue.
Hi! Just found your blog. Sounds like it's time for the "three hots" treatment (hot curry, hot sex, hot bath). Sorry if that lowers the tone of things ;-) Ruth
